It was almost 2:00 by the time Peter and Claire arrived at American Pie. They had stopped by Claire’s apartment so she could pack up all of her things, and when they arrived at the bakery Sonja was behind the counter, just finishing up with a customer. A young woman next to Sonja was taking almond pastries from a baking sheet and setting them in the display case.

“Boy, am I glad to see you!” Sonja said, handing her customer his change and pastry. “When I found your camera on the ground in front of Piaf’s grave, I started to get worried. Peter told me what happened. Are you okay?”

Claire nodded. “A lot better than it could have been. Only twenty-six stitches; I can live with that. Thanks for letting me stay here.”

“Happy to help. Let’s get you settled in.” Sonja turned to the young woman behind the counter and said something to her in French, and the woman nodded. “It’s this way,” Sonja said.

They followed Sonja through the kitchen, Peter wheeling the suitcase along behind him. A large table was in the center of the kitchen, residual flour still dusting its perimeter. Cooking utensils hung from hooks over the table, and large baking pans were stacked on the counters around the room.

“There’s a surprise waiting for you upstairs,” Sonja said over her shoulder as they climbed a narrow staircase at the back of the kitchen, a sly smile on her face. They reached the apartment door, and Sonja opened it.

“Hello, Claire.”
